Suzzane Shortt

In her twenty-plus year career, Suzanne Shortt has painted and exhibited in Asia, Africa, Europe, and North America. The artist’s work draws on the cultural and aesthetic diversity of this life. She is deeply interested in the patterns that reveal themselves as people navigate through different environments. Colour is her passion. Flat areas of bold colour and negative space charge the narrative of what she is painting. Woven through her work is her optimistic, life-affirming spirit.

Suzanne Shortt was born in Montreal, Canada, in 1969. In 1992 she received a first-class honours degree in Fine Art from Queen’s University, Canada, and a Bachelor of Education from the University’s Artist in Residence program the following year. She earned diplomas in Computer Animation and Technical Animation from Sheraton College, Canada in 1988 and 1989 respectively.

Her vivid canvases explore patterns of human interactions from an aerial perspective. Landscapes of people as seen from above – a busy beach, a public park, a community swimming pool, a marching band or a winter skating rink – provide fascinating human choreographies. Suzanne’s renderings of these open spaces are sometimes meditative, sometimes playful, and always compelling. Subtle personal stories populate the pictures. These stories prompt thoughts of the relationship between the individual and the crowd; between positive and negative space; between one person and their part in a larger human story.

Suzanne Shortt has also worked with various development agencies including CIDA (Canadian International Development Agency) to promote development issues through art. Most recently,  Shortt collaborated with artists and NGOs working on the Thai-Myanmar border to capture the perceptions of marginalised migrant communities.
